Campuses

UJ

We like to say that we put the UJ in SAUJS. Indeed this case with the awesome team that runs the campus. UJ specialises in a number of events that contribute to the well being of Jewish students. These include regular braai’s and shuirs as well hosting speakers on topical Jewish and South African issues. We make sure that there is kosher food on campus and help to move exams where needed. The members of the committee are Itia Propheta, Ori Tobias, Jess Diamond, Daniel Lazarus, Kalita Goldin and Saul Eliasov. WITS

Wits is one of the traditional homes of South African Jewish students. King David Linksfield is the largest feeder school to Wits in the country and of the university’s four Nobel prize winners three are Jewish, the other is Nelson Mandela. Thus there is a strong tradition of Jewish activism on the campus and Wits considered the country’s premier political campus. Thus it is not surprising at all that there were Jewish and Zionist societies on campus as long ago as 1926, a mere four years after the university being founded.

Today SAUJS is just as active as ever. We host interesting speakers, do interfaith events, have great socials, provide religious learning in own Beit Midrash, participate in political debates, do outreach work, help get exams moved from Jewish holidays and fight anti-Zionism on campus.

The committee this year is Dina Hendler, Devon Mogg, Sarit Swisa, Ariel Shapiro, David Subel, Daniel Carr, Carine Pick and Dani Fraduis. There are also a host of sub-committees so if you want to get involved it is easy. Just contact us This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. UCT

With the mountain behind us and the ocean as our view you could say that UCT SAUJS is the most chilled branch of the organisation. This is not say that we don’t do amazing work, only that we do it with that very special Cape Town flavour. We are the only campus in the country that has a kosher cafeteria and excellent opportunities to pursue Jewish Scholarship at the Kaplan Centre. Here host regular shuirs on variety of topics. We also work with other societies on campus whether this is on a social level or in outreach projects and on social action. We also throw a massive Yom Hatzmahut party every year and host regular Shabbat dinners for a chilled way to end the week. Our committee this year is Leigh Barnett, Margaux Klug, Kim Feldman, Nathan Rose and Glen Stein. We urge as many of you as possible to get involved and can be contacted at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
